Albrecht Solutions Turns Business Processes into Gold for Italian Jewelry Manufacturer

Pomellato S.p.A. is one of the most renowned jewelry companies in the world and the fifth largest in Europe. Founded in 1967 by Pino Rabolini, the heir to a rich heritage of goldsmiths, Pomellato was the first to offer pret-a-porter to the world of jewelry, bringing together unique stones, shapes, and colors with impeccable craftsmanship. Today the company has more than 100 goldsmiths employed at their Milan factory and more than 600 dealers across the globe.

The Challenge

As a global company, Pomellato sells its jewelry through outlets throughout the world, including specialty jewelers and luxury retailers such as Bloomingdales, Bergdorf Goodman, Saks, and Neiman Marcus. That means the company has to keep close track of its inventory, including consignments to large department stores. As Pomellato’s global sales grew in the United States, the company encountered specific challenges:

  1. Managing consignment sales with its larger retail customers, including tracking inventory and products sold;
  2. Product identification to track different pieces of jewelers that may look the same but may differ in the quality of the stones and materials;
  3. Product tracking including barcoding, lot management, and managing a large volume of daily product shipments;
  4. Tracking return merchandize authorizations (RMA), including merchandize returned for repair or replacement;
  5. Overall product data synchronization with headquarters in Milan.

The Solution

Recognizing the company needed assistance from a consulting firm with enterprise resource planning (ERP) experience that understood the U.S. market, Pomellato decided to partner with Albrecht Solutions because of the firm’s extensive experience managing business processes and global presence. Albrecht had the expertise to serve as a partner capable of addressing Pomellato’s global product management and supply chain challenges.

The first step was for the Albrecht team to assess and document Pomellato’s business processes. The team worked with Pomellato to design and develop an ERP solution to manage inventory consignment, product shipments, returns, and replacements. The new ERP platform was able to track any transaction, including products with unique lot numbers or variants such as materials or ring size. It also was able to synchronize with the Pomellato master database to track pricing, categories, and other details.

Although initial ERP deployment began to support U.S. retailers, Albrecht has applied its global expertise to help Pomellato manage its global infrastructure, including suppliers as well as retailers. With the new systems designed and implemented by Albrecht, Pomellato was able to maintain closer control over inventory and sales through subsidiaries anywhere in the world.

The Results

The results that Pomellato has seen over time have been dramatic. By implementing a global ERP system with Albrecht’s assistance, Pomellato has been able to improve business operations, integrating accounting, warehousing, and shipping and receiving. And by consolidating and documenting end-to-end business processes it has been easier for Pomellato to expand and open new markets, extending existing processes to new retailers and suppliers.

And as the manufacturer continues to grow, Albrecht continues to provide support, adding new ERP modules and designing new protocols and procedures. While some clients have few IT resources and rely on Albrecht to provide hands-on ERP management, Pomellato works with Albrecht to redesign its enterprise business systems and then manages its own operations in- house. Albrecht has been designing and implementing business processes and ERP systems for Pomellato for more than a decade and when the jewelry maker needs assistance expanding or updating its system, Albrecht is the first firm they call.
